1 13, 53| IDENTITY AND NON-IDENTITY~ ~ KUTADANTA, the head of the Brahmans
2 13, 53| the power of truth."~ Said Kutadanta: "Show me the truth and
3 13, 53| will never pass away."~ Kutadanta said: "I am told that thou
4 13, 53| laws of righteousness."~ Kutadanta, being of a religious disposition
5 13, 53| teachings of the Tathagata, Kutadanta continued: "Thou believest,
6 13, 53| life~everlasting."~ Then Kutadanta said: "Where, O venerable
7 13, 53| no such thing as wind."~Kutadanta made no reply; and the Blessed
8 13, 53| allotted dwelling-place replied Kutadanta. Said the~Blessed One: "
9 13, 53| refreshing breeze."~ Said Kutadanta: "I feel, O Lord, that thou
10 13, 53| knowledge remains." Said Kutadanta: "How is~that? Are not reasoning
11 13, 53| fruits of our acts endure."~ Kutadanta continued: "Tell me, O Lord,
12 13, 53| night as in the second?" Kutadanta hesitated. He thought it
13 13, 53| watch." "No, sir," said~Kutadanta. "In one sense it is not
14 13, 53| during the day," suggested Kutadanta.~ Said the Blessed One: "
15 13, 53| the third watch?" Replied Kutadanta: "In one sense it~is a different
16 13, 53| same." "Yes, sir," replied Kutadanta.~ The Blessed One continued: "
17 13, 53| No, sir," interrupted Kutadanta.~ Said the Buddha: "Dost
18 13, 53| the things of the world?" Kutadanta~bethought himself and rejoined
19 13, 53| not be myself."~ "True, Kutadanta, answered Buddha, he would
20 13, 53| only by continuity," said Kutadanta, but also and~mainly by
21 13, 53| continued life," rejoined Kutadanta, "for it~is the continuation
22 13, 53| How is that?" asked Kutadanta. "Where is thy self? asked
23 13, 53| asked the~Buddha. And when Kutadanta made no reply, he continued: "
24 13, 53| of which thou clamorest?" Kutadanta was~bewildered. "Lord of
25 13, 53| Verily, O Lord," rejoined Kutadanta, this is not a fair~retribution.
