E.N. What do you think, would the education of the laity or the mutual education of the clergy and laity help reach a cure? V.E. Before everything, of course, all the relationships which build His Church, are controlled by Her Head. He, the Lord Jesus Christ, directs. And if we turn back to look at the past of our Church, then we will see, that, for instance, the middle of the nineteenth century is incomparable to the end of the twentieth century. That is, less than a hundred and fifty years have passed and the picture is so different, that right away it is startling that this could happen. You see, the beginning of the eighteenth century (after 1721, when there was the leading into the synodal administration in the Church) and the end of the nineteenth century differs not so cardinally. One cannot compare what we have now. And any attempts to return church life in such a form as in the middle of the nineteenth century will be not only without hope but also with ruin. It is not completely needed to return. To say nothing that each change of church life, of her character, always happens with ill occurrences. It is needed to understand ill occurrences and to cover them with love, but always remember that “God opposes the proud, but gives blessing to the humble.” And humility is needed not only for a part of the Church but for everyone.
