I - KARNA AND ARJUN MEETSights of red and ghastly carnage day disclosed upon the plain, Sad Duryodhan gazed in sorrow and the tear was in his eye, "Karna!" so exclaimed Duryodhan, "hero of resistless might, Step forth, Kuru's chief and leader, mount thy sounding battle-car, Matchless was the ancient Bhishma in this famed and warlike land, Matchless too was doughty Drona in the warrior's skill and art, Greater than the ancient grandsire, greater than the Brahman old, Peerless Karna, lead us onward to a brighter happier fate, Lead us as the martial SKANDA led the conquering gods of old, As before the light of morning flies the baleful gloom of night, Priests with hymns and chanted mantra and with every sacred rite Earthen jars they placed around him with the sacred water full, Gem and jewel, corn and produce, by the arméd hero laid, Brahmans poured the holy water, bards his lofty praises sung, "Vanquish warlike sons of Pritha! " thus the holy Brahmans
blessed, And the holy rite concluded, Karna ranged his men in war, Morn to noon and noon to evening raged the battle on the plain, Helméd Arjun, crownéd Karna, met at last by will of fate, And the firm earth shook and trembled 'neath the furious rush of war, And the thickening cloud of arrows filled the firmament on high, Till the evening's sable garment mantled o'er the battle-field, |
