23| to prove that Christ is God, to this extent, that some,
23| manhood, have thought Him God only, and some have thought
23| and some have thought Him God the Father Himself; when
23| Scriptures show Christ to be God, but as the Son of God;
23| be God, but as the Son of God; and the Son of man, having
23| been taken up, moreover by God, that He must be believed
23| He might be Mediator of God and men, it behoved Him
23| both natures, and uniting God to man and man to God; so
23| uniting God to man and man to God; so that reasonably the
23| that reasonably the Son of God might be made by the assumption
23| reception of the Word of God the Son of God. This most
23| the Word of God the Son of God. This most profound and
23| Lord Jesus Christ, both God and man, that the human
24| DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SON OF GOD AND THE SON OF MAN; BECAUSE
24| distinction between the Son of God and the Son of man; because
24| proved to be both man and God. For they will have it that
24| appears also as the Son of God; that man and flesh and
24| said to be also the Son of God Himself. Whence, since no
24| Son of man and the Son of God, but the Son of man Himself
24| asserted to be the Son of God, the same Christ and the
24| same Christ and the Son of God is asserted to be man only;
24| which is, interpreted, God with us." For they propose
24| shall be called the Son of God." If, then, say they, the
24| say they, the angel of God says to Mary, "that Holy
24| born of her, is the Son of God. Man, say they, himself,
24| holy, itself is the Son of God. That also when the Scripture
24| places before us the Son of God, we ought to perceive, not
24| to perceive, not man, but God. And yet the divine Scripture
24| shall be called the Son of God," perchance we should have
24| body--is not the Son of God primarily, but consequently,
24| primarily, that the Son of God is the Word of God, incarnate
24| Son of God is the Word of God, incarnate by that Spirit
24| is the legitimate Son of God who is of God Himself; and
24| legitimate Son of God who is of God Himself; and He, while He
24| and makes Him the Son of God, which by nature He was
24| cause of that name Son of God is in the Spirit of the
24| reasonably became the Son of God, although originally He
24| originally He is not the Son of God. And therefore the angel,
24| shall be called the Son of God;" lest, had he not arranged
24| is the same as the Son of God and man. But now, explaining
24| shall be called the Son of God;" the proof that the Son
24| the proof that the Son of God descended, and that He,
24| consequently made Him the Son of God, because the Son of God
24| God, because the Son of God associated and joined Him
24| His nativity to the Son of God, by that very mingling He
24| heretics, between the Son of God and man; yet with their
24| also to receive the Son of God and man the Son of God;
24| of God and man the Son of God; that is, the Word of God
24| God; that is, the Word of God as it is written as God;
24| God as it is written as God; and thus to acknowledge
24| mutual alliance--man and God by the truth of the Scripture
25| MUST ALSO BE RECEIVED THAT GOD DIED; FOR SCRIPTURE SETS
25| THAT NOT ONLY WAS CHRIST GOD, BUT MAN ALSO.~Therefore,
25| Christ is not man only, but God also--and Scripture tells
25| teaches us to believe that God died; or if God does not
25| believe that God died; or if God does not die, and Christ
25| then Christ will not be God, because God cannot be admitted
25| will not be God, because God cannot be admitted to have
25| set forth that Christ is God only, and that there was
25| something. If Christ is God, and Christ died, then God
25| God, and Christ died, then God died. But when Scripture
25| shown, that He is not only God, but man also, it follows
25| associated as well of that which God is, as of that which man
25| Christ that died which is God, but that in Him died which
25| assuredly could not the Word of God and God in Christ be put
25| not the Word of God and God in Christ be put to death
25| nobility of the Word of God this power of not being
25| slay the sacred power of God, and if the cruelty of man
25| fail to slay the Word of God. For as the soul itself,
25| was made by the Word of God, is not killed by men, certainly
25| believed that the Word of God cannot be destroyed. And
25| they, says He, "live unto God;" and death in them does
25| affirmed and said to live unto God,--much rather death in Christ
26| writings not man only, but God also, other heretics, breaking
26| wishing to show that Christ is God the Father, in that He is
26| but also is declared to be God. For thus say they, If it
26| If it is asserted that God is one, and Christ is God,
26| God is one, and Christ is God, then say they, If the Father
26| Father and Christ be one God, Christ will be called the
26| this it was related, "And God made man, in the image of
26| made man, in the image of God made He him?" Or when he
26| and your Father; to my God, and your God?" Or when
26| Father; to my God, and your God?" Or when he finds it placed
26| art the Son of the living God?" Or when by the Lord Himself
26| Thee, the only and true God, and Jesus Christ, whom
26| forth as being obedient to God the Father, unless, if He
26| be subjected to another God the Father?~
27| planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. Therefore
27| nor he that watereth, but God who gives the increase.
27| same religion, one fear of God also, they are one even
27| being a man, makest thyself God," the Lord established the
27| either said that He was God, or wished it to be understood,
27| I said, I am. the Son of God?" Even here also He said
27| be subjected to another God. And still after this He
27| because I said I am the Son of God." Therefore if He plainly
27| testifies that He is the Son of God, and not the Father, it
28| drew near to the Son of God, by all means shall attain,
28| he shall not only come to God the Father, and shall know
28| He also is the image of God the Father; so that it is
28| in seeing the image of God the Father through the Son,
28| perfect contemplation of God the Father Almighty. And
28| heart, for they shall see God," it is understood to promise
28| of a pure heart shall see God, He proves by this very
28| because He was the image of God; and the Father, because
29| Similarly David: "Wherefore God, even Thy God, hath anointed
29| Wherefore God, even Thy God, hath anointed Thee with
29| salvation; who can make us God's temple, and fit us for
29| but the Spirit which is of God." Concerning Him he exultingly
29| that I have the Spirit of God." Of Him he says: "The Spirit
29| Christ to be the Son of God, or has rejected God the
29| of God, or has rejected God the Creator; no one utters
30| ALTHOUGH WE CALL CHRIST GOD, AND THE FATHER GOD, STILL
30| CHRIST GOD, AND THE FATHER GOD, STILL SCRIPTURE DOES NOT
30| moreover, asserted to be God by the Scriptures also,
30| the fact that Christ is God also, in such a way as that
30| there is declared to be one God by the Scriptures, and how
30| Jesus Christ Himself is God the Father, as moreover
30| that it was written that "God is one," they thought that
30| was man only, or really God the Father. And they were
30| Father argue as follows:--If God is one, and Christ is God,
30| God is one, and Christ is God, Christ is the Father, since
30| Christ is the Father, since God is one. If Christ be not
30| Father, because Christ is God the Son, there appear to
30| another, but the Father is God and Christ is God, then
30| Father is God and Christ is God, then there is not one God,
30| God, then there is not one God, but two Gods are at once
30| Father and the Son; and if God is one, by consequence Christ
30| rightly the Father may be one God. Thus indeed the Lord is,
30| believe, and maintain that God is one, who made the heaven
30| none. "I," says He, "am God, and there is none beside
30| and beside me there is no God who is as I." And, "Who
30| all may know that Thou art God alone." Moreover, the Lord
30| concerning that which is good? God alone is good." Moreover,
30| not a mediator of one, but God is one." But even as we
30| Jesus Christ the Son of God is our Lord and God; because "
30| Son of God is our Lord and God; because "in the beginning
30| Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word. The
30| the Word was with God, and God was the Word. The same was
30| was in the beginning with God." And, "The Word was made
30| us." And, "My Lord and my God." And, "Whose are the fathers,
30| Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for evermore." What,
30| then, does it say that "God is one?" Or is not Christ
30| is one?" Or is not Christ God also? How, then, is it said
30| Christ," My Lord and my God?" Unless, therefore, we
30| is one "called good, even God;" but in the same Scriptures
30| that, from the fact that God is one, no obstruction arises
30| Christ also is declared to be God.~
31| XXXI. ARGUMENT. BUT THAT GOD, THE, SON OF GOD, BORN OF
31| BUT THAT GOD, THE, SON OF GOD, BORN OF GOD THE FATHER
31| THE, SON OF GOD, BORN OF GOD THE FATHER FROM EVERLASTING,
31| IS LORD, AND THE ANGEL OF GOD'S GREAT COUNSEL, TO WHOM
31| COMMUNITY OF SUBSTANCE.~Thus God the Father, the Founder
31| immortal, eternal, is one God; to whose greatness, or
31| of the power put forth by God, the mysteries of whose
31| things were made. Assuredly God proceeding from God, causing
31| Assuredly God proceeding from God, causing a person second
31| characteristic that He is one God. For if He had not been
31| being born of Him who is one God. In which kind, being both
31| therefore He declared that God is one, in that He proved
31| things, although He also is God, yet He shows the one God
31| God, yet He shows the one God the Father by His obedience,
31| which is unborn,--which God the Father only is, being
31| is, even although He is God who is born, yet He shows
31| yet He shows Him to be one God whom He who was born proved
31| beginning. He therefore is God, but begotten for this special
31| result, that He should be God. He is also the Lord, but
31| announce the Great Counsel of God. And His divinity is thus
31| found to be both Lord and God of all else. Whence, while
31| delivered to Him who is God, and all things are subjected
31| is manifested as the one God, from whom alone this power
31| substance to the Father. God indeed is shown as the Son,
31| Father is proved to be one God; while by degrees in reciprocal
31| them; so that reasonably God the Father is God of all,
31| reasonably God the Father is God of all, and the source also
31| Lord. Moreover, the Son is God of all else, because God
31| God of all else, because God the Father put before all
31| begot. Thus the Mediator of God and men, Christ Jesus, having
31| Father, inasmuch as He is God; with every creature subdued
31| found at one with His Father God, has, by abiding in that
31| was heard," briefly proved God His Father to be one and
31| be one and only and true God.~
