501 23|          to prove that Christ is God, to this extent, that some,
502 23|        manhood, have thought Him God only, and some have thought
503 23|        and some have thought Him God the Father Himself; when
504 23|     Scriptures show Christ to be God, but as the Son of God;
505 23|        be God, but as the Son of God; and the Son of man, having
506 23|       been taken up, moreover by God, that He must be believed
507 23|          He might be Mediator of God and men, it behoved Him
508 23|        both natures, and uniting God to man and man to God; so
509 23|    uniting God to man and man to God; so that reasonably the
510 23|       that reasonably the Son of God might be made by the assumption
511 23|         reception of the Word of God the Son of God. This most
512 23|       the Word of God the Son of God. This most profound and
513 23|          Lord Jesus Christ, both God and man, that the human

531 24|       primarily, that the Son of God is the Word of God, incarnate

538 24|  originally He is not the Son of God. And therefore the angel,
539 24|       shall be called the Son of God;" lest, had he not arranged

553 25|         THAT NOT ONLY WAS CHRIST GOD, BUT MAN ALSO.~Therefore,
554 25|      Christ is not man only, but God also--and Scripture tells
555 25|       teaches us to believe that God died; or if God does not
556 25|     believe that God died; or if God does not die, and Christ
557 25|          then Christ will not be God, because God cannot be admitted
558 25|         will not be God, because God cannot be admitted to have
559 25|         set forth that Christ is God only, and that there was
560 25|          something. If Christ is God, and Christ died, then God
561 25|       God, and Christ died, then God died. But when Scripture
562 25|       shown, that He is not only God, but man also, it follows
563 25| associated as well of that which God is, as of that which man

565 25|  assuredly could not the Word of God and God in Christ be put

569 25|         fail to slay the Word of God. For as the soul itself,

572 25|        they, says He, "live unto God;" and death in them does
573 25|   affirmed and said to live unto God,--much rather death in Christ
574 26|       writings not man only, but God also, other heretics, breaking
575 26|   wishing to show that Christ is God the Father, in that He is
576 26|       but also is declared to be God. For thus say they, If it
577 26|           If it is asserted that God is one, and Christ is God,
578 26|        God is one, and Christ is God, then say they, If the Father
579 26|         Father and Christ be one God, Christ will be called the
580 26|        this it was related, "And God made man, in the image of
581 26|        made man, in the image of God made He him?" Or when he
582 26|           and your Father; to my God, and your God?" Or when

590 27|       same religion, one fear of God also, they are one even
591 27|      being a man, makest thyself God," the Lord established the
592 27|          either said that He was God, or wished it to be understood,
593 27|         I said, I am. the Son of God?" Even here also He said

614 30|         moreover, asserted to be God by the Scriptures also,
615 30|          the fact that Christ is God also, in such a way as that
616 30|      there is declared to be one God by the Scriptures, and how
617 30|          Jesus Christ Himself is God the Father, as moreover
618 30|        that it was written that "God is one," they thought that
619 30|          was man only, or really God the Father. And they were
620 30|     Father argue as follows:--If God is one, and Christ is God,
621 30|        God is one, and Christ is God, Christ is the Father, since
622 30|      Christ is the Father, since God is one. If Christ be not
623 30|        Father, because Christ is God the Son, there appear to
624 30|       another, but the Father is God and Christ is God, then
625 30|      Father is God and Christ is God, then there is not one God,
626 30|       God, then there is not one God, but two Gods are at once
627 30|       Father and the Son; and if God is one, by consequence Christ
628 30|    rightly the Father may be one God. Thus indeed the Lord is,
629 30|       believe, and maintain that God is one, who made the heaven
630 30|          none. "I," says He, "am God, and there is none beside
631 30|        and beside me there is no God who is as I." And, "Who
632 30|       all may know that Thou art God alone." Moreover, the Lord
633 30|   concerning that which is good? God alone is good." Moreover,
634 30|       not a mediator of one, but God is one." But even as we
635 30|          Jesus Christ the Son of God is our Lord and God; because "
636 30|       Son of God is our Lord and God; because "in the beginning
637 30|      Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word. The
638 30|       the Word was with God, and God was the Word. The same was
639 30|        was in the beginning with God." And, "The Word was made
640 30|        us." And, "My Lord and my God." And, "Whose are the fathers,
641 30|    Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for evermore." What,
642 30|          then, does it say that "God is one?" Or is not Christ
643 30|        is one?" Or is not Christ God also? How, then, is it said
644 30|          Christ," My Lord and my God?" Unless, therefore, we
645 30|        is one "called good, even God;" but in the same Scriptures
646 30|         that, from the fact that God is one, no obstruction arises
647 30|    Christ also is declared to be God.~
648 31|         XXXI. ARGUMENT. BUT THAT GOD, THE, SON OF GOD, BORN OF
649 31|        BUT THAT GOD, THE, SON OF GOD, BORN OF GOD THE FATHER
650 31|         THE, SON OF GOD, BORN OF GOD THE FATHER FROM EVERLASTING,
651 31|        IS LORD, AND THE ANGEL OF GOD'S GREAT COUNSEL, TO WHOM
652 31|     COMMUNITY OF SUBSTANCE.~Thus God the Father, the Founder
653 31|        immortal, eternal, is one God; to whose greatness, or
654 31|        of the power put forth by God, the mysteries of whose
655 31|      things were made. Assuredly God proceeding from God, causing
656 31|    Assuredly God proceeding from God, causing a person second
657 31|    characteristic that He is one God. For if He had not been
658 31|     being born of Him who is one God. In which kind, being both
659 31|       therefore He declared that God is one, in that He proved
660 31|      things, although He also is God, yet He shows the one God
661 31|        God, yet He shows the one God the Father by His obedience,
662 31|          which is unborn,--which God the Father only is, being
663 31|          is, even although He is God who is born, yet He shows
664 31|       yet He shows Him to be one God whom He who was born proved
665 31|       beginning. He therefore is God, but begotten for this special
666 31|        result, that He should be God. He is also the Lord, but
667 31|    announce the Great Counsel of God. And His divinity is thus
668 31|        found to be both Lord and God of all else. Whence, while
669 31|          delivered to Him who is God, and all things are subjected
670 31|         is manifested as the one God, from whom alone this power
671 31|         substance to the Father. God indeed is shown as the Son,
672 31|       Father is proved to be one God; while by degrees in reciprocal
673 31|         them; so that reasonably God the Father is God of all,
674 31|     reasonably God the Father is God of all, and the source also
675 31|       Lord. Moreover, the Son is God of all else, because God
676 31|         God of all else, because God the Father put before all
677 31|      begot. Thus the Mediator of God and men, Christ Jesus, having
678 31|        Father, inasmuch as He is God; with every creature subdued
679 31|     found at one with His Father God, has, by abiding in that
680 31|       was heard," briefly proved God His Father to be one and
681 31|         be one and only and true God.~
