The Fifth Apparition 13 September 1917

A crowd estimated at twenty thousand observed atmospheric phenomena similar to those of the previous apparitions: the sudden cooling of the air, a dimming of the sun to the point where the stars could be seen, and a rain resembling iridescent petals or snowflakes that disappeared before touching the ground. This time, a luminous globe was noticed which moved slowly and majestically through the sky from east to west and, at the end of the apparition, in the opposite direction. The seers saw a light, and, immediately following this, they saw Our Lady over the holm oak.

Our Lady: Continue to pray the Rosary to obtain the end of the war. In October, Our Lord will also come, as well as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus, to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices, but He does not want you to sleep with the ropes; wear them only during the day. 32

Lucia: They have requested me to ask you for many things, for the cure of some sick persons, of a deaf-mute.

Our Lady: Yes, I will cure some, others not. 33 In October, I will perform a miracle for all to believe. 34

"And rising, she disappeared in the same manner as before." 35

32 The children had started to wear a thick rough cord around their waists for penance. They did not remove it even at bedtime, which often prevented them from sleeping the whole night. This explains Our Lady's praise and suggestion.

33 At this point, De Marchi adds, "Our Lord does not trust them all" (De Marchi, p. 169). The parish priest of Fatima wrote down a phrase with an identical meaning: “because Our Lord does not want to believe in them” (Documentação Crítica de Fátima, vol. I, p. 22). In the replies to Dr. Goulven, Sister Lucia says that she does not remember having said this. (Reis, A Vidente de Fátima dialoga, p. 45)

De Marchi also includes the following request of Lucia: "So many believe that I am [such] an impostor and a cheat that they say I deserve to be hanged and burned. Will you please perform a miracle so that all of them can believe?"

None of this appears in the memoirs of Sister Lucia.

34 De Marchi adds this dialogue:

Lucia: “Some people gave me letters for Your Grace and a bottle of cologne water.”

Our Lady: “These are not needed in heaven.”

This colloquy, with slight variations, was also written down by the parish priest of Fatima (Documentação Crítica de Fátima, vol. I, p. 22). However, in answer to an enquiry of Fr. José Pedro da Silva, Sister Lucia said she did not remember having offeredwater with a smell” to Our Lady (Reis, A Vidente de Fátima dialoga, p. 63). This colloquy also does not appear in the seer’s Memoirs.

35 Memoir II, p. 156, and IV. pp. 346,348; De Marchi, pp. 138-139; Walsh, pp. 115-116; Ayres da Fonseca, pp.70-71;Galamba de O1iveira, p.93.
