 1 Intro|        thus describes the Seventh Ecumenical Council of the Christian
 2 Intro|           1. That the Council was Ecumenical. 2. What its decision was;
 3 Intro|        This Council was certainly Ecumenical. ~It seems strange that
 4 Intro|       entertain a doubt as to the ecumenical character of the council
 5 Intro|           Roman Emperors to be an Ecumenical Council. Vide letter of
 6 Intro|     Council of Nice is one of the Ecumenical Councils of the Catholic
 7 Intro|       ergo it cannot have been an Ecumenical Council of the Catholic
 8 Intro|          to be to-day accepted as Ecumenical by the Latin and Greek Churches.
 9 Intro|        are false, then one of the Ecumenical Synods set forth false doctrine,
10 Intro|        necessary infallibility of Ecumenical Synods.(2) ~Among those
11 Intro|           have argued against the ecumenical character of the Seventh
12 Intro|   conclusion that the council was ecumenical, "it would be difficult
13 Intro|    authentication of a subsequent Ecumenical Synod. The argument seems
14 Intro|          cils--its recognition as Ecumenical by a later Council undoubtedly
15 Intro|           whether the last one is ecumenical or no, how will its approval
16 Intro|      Latin Churches receive it as Ecumenical" (p. 132). He might have
17 Intro|         that he "revered the four Ecumenical Councils as he did the four
18 Intro|           Gospels," but the fifth Ecumenical Synod had been held a number
19 Intro|  conclusion that at that time the Ecumenical character of the Fifth Synod (
20 Intro|          still speaks of only six Ecumenical Synods, he omits two (according
21 Intro|       Latins as the Eighth of the Ecumenical Councils. Would Sir William
22 Intro|         recognize that Council as Ecumenical and as the Eighth Synod?
23 Intro|         the acknowledgment of its ecumenical character, for it was called
24 Intro|           for it was called as an Ecumenical Synod, this we expressly
25 Intro|      argument brought against the ecumenical character of this council--
26 2    |           I should demand that an Ecumenical Council should be held,
27 2    |         pious Sovereignty that an Ecumenical Council might be assembled.
28 2    |        also from the six holy and ecumenical synods, and from the local
29 2    |         as the Saints and the six Ecumenical Synods have handed down.
30 2    |           Fathers and of the holy Ecumenical Synods, and the tradition
31 2    |        Christian, to the holy and Ecumenical Synod: I confess and I agree
32 2    |        Apostolic precepts and the Ecumenical Synods he is worthy to be
33 2    |          most holy archbishop and ecumenical patriarch, is in no sense
34 2    |       they who had appeared at an ecumenical synod should also set forth
35 2    |      Therefore also this holy and ecumenical Synod, met together for
36 2    |       teach, just as the holy and ecumenical six Synods have decreed

40 3    | principally those of the six holy Ecumenical Synods. In the first place
41 3    |          first place the holy and ecumenical great synod assembled at
42 3    |       holy Fathers and of the six Ecumenical Synods, that no one may
43 3    |       with the assent of the holy Ecumenical patriarch and at the bidding
44 3    |          accept this our Holy and Ecumenical Seventh Synod, let him be
45 3    |           and from the seven holy Ecumenical Synods! ~[Then follows the
46 3    |        Leo said: Let the holy and ecumenical synod say, if with the consent
47 4    |        STYLING ITSELF THE SEVENTH ECUMENICAL COUNCIL, BUT COMMONLY CALLED
48 4    |         action of the last of the Ecumenical Councils clear it is necessary
49 4    |           the acts of the Seventh Ecumenical Council. ~This decree was
50 5    |        DECREE OF THE HOLY, GREAT, ECUMENICAL SYNOD, THE SECOND OF NICE. ~(
51 5    |              The holy, great, and Ecumenical Synod which by the grace
52 5    |     Church, and following the Six Ecumenical Synods, especially that
53 6    |      Church of God at the Seventh Ecumenical Synod anathematized all
54 7    |        THE CANONS OF THE HOLY AND ECUMENICAL SEVENTH COUNCIL.~[1] ~CANON
55 7    |           Apostles, or by the Six Ecumenical Councils, or by Councils
56 7    |           the decrees of the said Ecumenical Councils, or by our holy
57 7    |         Holy Apostles, of the Six Ecumenical Synods, as also of the local
58 7    |        best canons drawn up by an Ecumenical Synod. The bishops were
59 7    |       canons set forth by the Six Ecumenical Councils. And although all
60 7    |          these words ["of the Six Ecumenical Synods"] can have, for it
61 7    |  ecclesiastical canons of the Six Ecumenical Synods, and not to their
62 7    |    recognized by East and West as ecumenical! The reader can hardly resist
63 8    |        forth by the six, holy and ecumenical councils; and accordingly
64 8    |      images, such an one our holy ecumenical council (fortified by the
65 10   |       Calcuth in 787 rejected the ecumenical character of II. Nice, because
66 10   |          of Peter, as the Seventh Ecumenical Synod of the Catholic Church. ~
67 11   |        nor decrees of the Seventh Ecumenical Synod, of which they were
68 11   |        Sees as the Seventh of the Ecumenical Councils of the Catholic
69 11   |    chapter the twenty-eighth, the ecumenical character of II. Nice is
70 11   |        least, that they styled it ecumenical, for it neither held the
71 11   |    neither held the purity of the ecumenical faith, nor did it obtain
72 11   |      obtain authority through the ecumenical action of the Churches. . . .
73 11   |         it might have been styled ecumenical. But since it was not contented
74 11   |       Fathers it cannot be styled ecumenical," etc., etc. ~Such are in
75 11   |           nearly every one of the Ecumenical Synods, and will not therefore
76 11   |     instant disputes to have been ecumenical. ~Moreover, that after this
77 12   |       Council of Nice to being an Ecumenical Synod. I do not know upon
78 12   |        feeling against the Second Ecumenical Council of Nice, and against
79 12   |         only the Seventh but also Ecumenical, should neither be held
80 12   |    declared to be the Seventh nor ecumenical but wholly without authority." ~
81 13   |   assembly of bishops rejected an Ecumenical Council accepted by the
82 14   |        held by the Seventh of the Ecumenical Synods in all subsequent
83 14   |           to be the Eighth of the Ecumenical Synods. Its chief concern
84 14   |     Easterns as the Eighth of the Ecumenical Synods. But at this synod,
85 14   |     forced to count that synod as ecumenical, since we do not at all
86 14   |           the title of the Eighth Ecumenical. But Cardinal Julian did
87 14   |       enter on any defence of the Ecumenical character of this so-called "
88 14   |           speak still of the "Six Ecumenical Councils" in doing so they
