PART TWO

FRUITFUL SERVICE TO THE CONSECRATED LIFE

The overview of the USG’s history has enabled us to observe much of what it has contributed during its almost half a century of existence, as well as the possibilities it has of continuing to be an instrument for the work of identification, collaboration and promotion of the consecrated life of the new millennium.

I believe this examination of what the USG has achieved - and my overview gives only a sample - clearly shows that its objective has always been to offer a service to the consecrated life, helping it to face the challenges of a world of rapid and profound changes and a Church deeply involved on the road of postconciliar renewal. The ability to see clearly, open-mindedness, frank and respectful dialog, decision, ability and hope have been the companions, in larger or smaller measure, of the USG’s history. I think I really can say that the great Superiors General who have played a part in the USG have served with the greatest possible commitment, giving the very best of their abilities in love and loyalty. I also believe it is important to emphasize certain achievements which confirm what I have just pointed out.
