48. We thought We should explain these matters in this encyclicalletter to reveal the bases of the answersgiven to the missionary who raised the questionsmentioned at the beginning. But We also wanted to make clear to all the good will which the ApostolicSeefeels for OrientalCatholics in commanding them to observefully their ancientrites which are not at variance with the Catholicreligion or with propriety. The Church does not requireschismatics to abandon their rites when they return to Catholicunity, but only that they forswear and detestheresy. Its greatdesire is for the preservation, not the destruction, of differentpeoples-inshort, that all may be Catholic rather than all become Latin.

We end Our letter at last, imparting to its every reader the Apostolic Blessing.

Given at St. Mary Major, July 26, 1755, in the fifteenth year of Our pontificate.
