Evangelical roots of citizenship In the furrows of the Covenant
In the furrows of the Covenant
66. Evangelical citizenship is found in the furrows of the Covenant, i.e., in that journey traced out by God throughout history to achieve His plan of salvation in favor of all humanity, a journey where every step is a sign of love, every stage a revelation of wisdom and every turn a call to creative fidelity.
The Bible describes this journey and narrates this story of love, which finds its central point in Jesus Christ and continues in His disciples from generation to generation. Called to follow Christ more closely through a life that is chaste, poor and obedient, similar to His own, we have entered deeply into the mystery of this Covenant as individuals and as community. As we proceed gradually through the furrows of the Covenant, we become ever more aware of our responsibility to be active citizens in a world thirsting for spiritual values, joy, solidarity, communion. At the same time, we discover ever more our identity as citizens of the Kingdom of heaven with our glance turned on high towards the Other, the Beyond.
We have on this journey the marching orders left us by Jesus: the beatitudes, and we have a model and wise guide, Mary.
