9. I used to wonder, and I wonder, what are the ways to penetrate the “mystery of man”
and organize a formation that is ever more respectful of his dignity and his tasks? Discussing with students in two seminaries it appeared to us that there are three that must be followed: the way of revelation, the way of the sciences, the way of experience. Basically, it is a single route into which the Trinity, man, and peoples intervene in synergy.
- The way of revelation: “The truth is that only in the mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of man take on light.” 19
- The way of human sciences, which express the richness of investigation, the suffering of the search, the co-responsibility in education and building society. Every research on man is in some way sacred.
- The way of experience leads into the multiple cultures as explanation, through symbols, maxims, traditions,…, of human life and its continuous going “beyond” the confines of the immediate and time. The way of experience also includes mystical experience.
Correctness and common sense make us recognize that our understanding of the mystery of Christ and of man is always limited; today, we have arrived, thanks also to the charismatic experiences of our founders, at conquering further horizons, but the road remains open, in the stupor over new realities fruit of communion and human genius. Nothing, therefore, is ever to be absolutized and closed within one’s own cultural and spiritual parameters, and especially not “imposed” directly or indirectly. This reflection makes me think of John Paul II to a group of teachers: “Whoever dedicates himself to the theoretical study and to the practical application of the educational/formation mission cannot fail to feel he is committed to proposing in himself a successful humanity, in order to thus become a person in whom the splendor of the human transpires, a person who, with his life witness even more than with his culture, induces others to complete self-fulfillment.” 20
