7. What doctrinal issues necessitated the Third Council? Christological issues — that is, disputes concerning the nature of Christ, brought about the Third Council. The Council was convened against one of the principal heresies in the Church, Nestorianism. This false teaching denied that there are two distinct natures, divine and human, united in the Person of Christ (hypostatic union). This teaching was condemned at the Council.
