TEXT OF THE ADDRESS

As we prepare to celebrate the Paschal Mystery and its special re-enactement in the days ahead, we turn our thoughts to an event that will take place next year: the Fortyfirst International Eucharistic Congress.

By its very international nature, this Eucharistic Congress is an event of worldwide importance.

From many parts of the world men and women will assemble to honor the mystery of Christ in his Eucharistic Sacrifice and presence, and to proclaim his Lordship. At the same time they will open their hearts, with new sensitivity and fresh concern, to the many urgent needs of their brethren-the just aspirations and legitimate anxieties of mankind. And to all these hungers of the human family, the Eucharistic Congress will offer, with confidence and loving faith, the only-the perfect-solution: Jesus himself, who said: “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be hungry and he who believes in me will never thirst” (Io. 6, 35).

We pray that the nature of this ecclesial event will be readily understood and esteemed by all in the dignity of its purpose and in the simplicity and reverence due to its fulfillment. May Mary the Mother of Jesus and Mother of his Church obtain t h e grate for all men to recognize that her Son, who is “the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matth. 16, 16) is indeed the true Bread of Life who alone can satisfy the hungers of the human family.

Mentre ci prepariamo a celebrare il Mistero Pasquale e il suo speciale rinnovamento in questi giorni a venire, noi rivolgiamo i nostri pensieri all’avvenimento che si celebrerà il prossimo anno: il 41” Congresso Eucaristico Internazionale.

A motivo della sua natura internazionale, questo Congresso Eucaristico costituisce un avvenimento di importanza mondiale.

Da molte parti del mondo uomini e donne si riuniranno, per onorare il Mistero di Cristo nel suo sacrificio e nella sua presenza eucaristica, e per proclamare la sua onnipotenza. Nel medesimo tempo essi apriranno i loro cuori con rinnovata sensibilità e con genuini propositi ai molti urgenti bisogni dei loro fratelli, alle attuali aspirazioni e alle legittime ansietà dell’umanità. E per ogni necessità della famiglia umana, il Congresso Eucaristico offrirà, con confidenza e fede di amore, l’unica - la perfetta - soluzione: lo stesso Gesù Cristo, il quale ha detto « Io sono il pane della vita. Chi viene a me non avrà più fame e chi crede in me non avrà più sete » (Io. 6, 35).

Noi preghiamo che la natura di questo avvenimento ecclesiale sia compresa e stimata in tutta la dignità del suo intento e nella semplicità e riverenza che è dovuta per la sua pienezza.

Possa Maria Madre di Gesù e Madre della Chiesa di Cristo ottenere la grazia per tutti gli uomini per riconoscere che il Suo Figlio, il quale è « il Messia, il Figlio del Dio vivente » (Matth. 16, 16), è il vero pane di vita che solo può soddisfare ogni fame della famiglia umana.
