31. The documents of all the centres of
Catholic Action have been sequestered "en masse." Correspondence that
could be suspected to have some relation to the Associations affected, or even
with those not affected, such as the oratories, continues to be intercepted and
sequestered. Tell Us, therefore, tell the country,
tell the world, what document and how many of them there are, which treat of
politics woven and directed by Catholic Action with all this peril to the
State! We venture to say that none such will be found, unless they are read and
interpreted in accordance with preconceived and unfair ideas, which are
contradicted fully by facts and by evidence and by numberless proofs and
witnesses. If and when there are any genuine documents found that are worthy of
consideration, We shall be the first to take them
seriously. But what fair-minded man will wish, for example, to charge a person
with political activities and political actions dangerous to the State merely
for making some complaint or deploring the harsh treatment inflicted so many
times and in so many places on the Catholic Action Associations even previous
to the time of these latest outbreaks?
