2 VI | doubtful a thing." Quoth Barlaam, "Well hast thou said that
3 VI | man forthwith. ~So when Barlaam was come in, and had in
4 VI | marvellous tales." Then began Barlaam to discourse with him thus: "
5 VI | disappointed of my hope." Barlaam answered, "Fair are thy
6 VII | VII. ~Again therefore Barlaam took up his parable and
7 VIII | of his joy, he embraced Barlaam, saying: "Most honoured
8 VIII | me." ~Again, therefore, Barlaam answered, "Yea, my lord
9 VIII | Thus questioned he; and Barlaam answered thus: "The good
10 IX | these matters sure?" ~Quoth Barlaam, "From the past I gain certainty
11 X | joy of the righteous?" ~Barlaam answered: "It is written
12 XI | other services thereto?" ~Barlaam answered him, "Hear what
13 XI | shall all my hope be vain?" ~Barlaam answered, "Deem not so.
14 XII | sweet God and Master." ~Barlaam answered, "Well said, my
15 XIII | interpretation thereof. Then said Barlaam, "The first friend is the
16 XIV | it in peace and safety." ~Barlaam took up his parable and
17 XV | right plain unto me." Quoth Barlaam, "The sending before thee

25 XVIII | enjoy thy ministration." ~Barlaam answered, "Nought forbiddeth

91 XXXVIII| them down and conversed. Barlaam began, saying, "Welcome
92 XXXVIII| deceits? " ~Thus questioned Barlaam, and Ioasaph answered, telling
93 XXXVIII| that it was meal-time, and Barlaam spread his lavish table,
94 XXXVIII| dates, planted and tended by Barlaam's own hands, such as are
95 XXXVIII| So Ioasaph abode with Barlaam for some many years, pursuing
96 XXXVIII| the religious life, that Barlaam, who had spent many years
97 XXXIX | XXXIX. ~Thus did Barlaam and Ioasaph dwell together,
98 XXXIX | after godliness, one day Barlaam called to him his spiritual
99 XXXIX | Christ Jesus." ~When blessed Barlaam had so said, Ioasaph's tears
100 XXXIX | longer in this world after Barlaam's decease, saying, "Wherefore,
101 XXXIX | peradventure, in his absence, Barlaam might pay the debt of nature,
102 XXXIX | Holy Sacrifice, saintly Barlaam offered up to God the unbloody
103 XXXIX | of their ordinary food, Barlaam again fed Ioasaph's soul
104 XXXIX | even-tide and all night long did Barlaam converse with Ioasaph, who
105 XXXIX | just as day began to dawn, Barlaam ended his discourse, lifted
106 XL | in the hair-shirt, which Barlaam had given him in his palace;
107 XL | prayers and intercessions of Barlaam thy servant, for thou art
108 XL | straightway thought that he saw Barlaam, as it were, chiding him
109 XL | me where thou dwellest?" Barlaam answered, "In this mighty
110 XL | Ioasaph thought he asked Barlaam to bring him to his own
111 XL | the sights thereof. But Barlaam said that his time was not
112 XL | out to Ioasaph his way to Barlaam. This man honoured the corpse
113 XL | sepulchre of his father Barlaam; for it was only meet that
114 XL | him all that had befallen Barlaam, and this blessed Ioasaph.
115 XL | gravestone. There he descried Barlaam and Ioasaph lying, as they
116 XL | intercessions of blessed Barlaam and Ioasaph, of whom this
