Canon 253

1. Besides the chancellor other notaries can be appointed whose

signature establishes the authenticity of any acts whatsoever, of

judicial acts only or of the acts of a certain case or transaction only. 2. Notaries are to be of good character and above

reproach; a priest must be the notary in cases in which the reputation of a cleric can be called into question.
