Canon 383

Even though it is fitting that clerics have the same civil and

political rights as other citizens, nevertheless: (1) they are

forbidden to assume public offices which entail a participation

in the exercise of civil power; (2) since military service is

less appropriate for those in the clerical state, clerics are not

to take it up voluntarily except by permission of their hierarch;

(3) they are to make use of exemption from exercising public

functions and offices alien to the clerical state as well as military service granted in their favor by civil laws, agreements or customs.
