Canon 496

1. One who during temporary profession wishes to leave the

monastery for a grave reason and return to the world, shall submit a petition to the superior of the monastery sui iuris. 2.

The superior shall forward this petition, together with his or

her votum and that of the council, to the eparchial bishop whose

competence it is, even for a monastery of pontifical right, to

grant in this instance the indult of departure from the monastery

and return to secular life, unless particular law reserves this

to the patriarch in monasteries located within the territorial

boundaries of a patriarchal Church.
