Canon 614

1. The homily, in which during the course of the liturgical

year the mysteries of faith and the norms of Christian living are

expounded from Sacred Scripture, is strongly recommended as part

of the liturgy itself. 2. Parish priests and rectors of churches have the obligation to take care that a homily is given at

least during the Divine Liturgy on Sundays and feast days and

that it is only omitted for a grave reason. 3. A pastor cannot

habitually hand over to another his obligation of preaching to

the people committed to his pastoral care except for a just reason approved by the local hierarch. 4. The homily is reserved

to a priest or, according to norm of particular law, also to a

deacon.
