Canon 840

1. Permission for a secret marriage can be granted by the local

hierarch for a serious and urgent reason and also includes the

grave obligation of observing secrecy on the part of the local

hierarch, the pastor, the priest who was granted the faculty of

blessing the marriage, witnesses, and the one spouse if the other

does not consent to revealing it. 2. The obligation of observing secrecy ceases on the part of the local hierarch if serious

scandal or serious harm to the sanctity of marriage is threatened

by the observance of secrecy. 3. A marriage which is secretly

celebrated is to be recorded only in the special register which

is to be kept in the secret archive of the eparchial curia unless

a most grave reason prevents it.
