Canon 1229

1. When the judge legitimately interrogates witnesses they must

tell the truth. 2. With due regard for the prescription of

can. 1231 the following are exempted from the obligation to

answer: (1) clerics in regard to whatever was made known to

them in connection with their sacred ministry; civil officials,

doctors, midwives, advocates, notaries and others who are bound

to professional secrecy, even by reason of advice rendered, as

regards matters subject to this secrecy; (2) persons who fear

that infamy, dangerous vexations or other serious evils will

happen to themselves, or their spouse, or persons related to them

by consanguinity or affinity, as a result of their testimony.
