Canon 1240

The parties may not assist at the questioning of witnesses unless

the judge believes that they must be admitted, especially when

the matter concerns the private good. On the other hand, their

advocates or their procurators may assist unless the judge believes that the process must be carried on in secret because of

the circumstances of things or persons.
