Canon 1244

The judge, first of all, is to establish the identity of the

witness; the judge should seek out what is the relationship of

the witness with the parties, and, when addressing specific

questions to the witness regarding the case, the judge is also to

inquire about the sources of the witness' knowledge and the precise time the witness learned what is asserted.
