Canon 856 1. Ordinarily the interrogation is made by the authority of the local hierarch of the converted party; if the other party requests time for responding, the same hierarch is to grant it with the warning that after the period elapsed without any answer, the person's silence is considered to be a negative response. 2. An interrogation can also be done privately by the converted party and is indeed licit, if the form prescribed above cannot be observed. 3. In either case, the fact that the interrogation took place and its outcome must legitimately be evident in the external forum.
