2 Int | INTRODUCTION~Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian
3 Int | old. We know nothing of Machiavelli’s youth and little about
4 Int | Greek.1 The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find
5 Int | lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli’s report and description
6 Int | uncompromising manner by Machiavelli in his Prince.~The limits
7 Int | the Medici, the efforts of Machiavelli, who was an ardent republican,
8 Int | were returned to power. Machiavelli attempted to conciliate
9 Int | estate at San Casciano that Machiavelli wrote The Prince, the most
10 Int | commentary on Livy, give Machiavelli an opportunity to express
11 Int | is the best known of all Machiavelli’s writings. Herein he expresses
12 Int | as its name indicates, Machiavelli is concerned chiefly with
13 Int | of the Republic, and here Machiavelli’s model republic was the
14 Int | of the state. Much that Machiavelli says in this treatise is
15 Int | more harshly judged than Machiavelli, especially in the two centuries
16 Int | most pernicious. But were Machiavelli’s doctrines really new?
17 Int | I believe, who said that Machiavelli tells us what princes do,
18 Int | what they ought to do. When Machiavelli takes Cæsar Borgia as a
19 Int | must be maintained. And Machiavelli has laid down the principles,

22 Int | beginning with Book II. Machiavelli’s method has been censured
23 Int | History. Of the other works of Machiavelli we may mention here his

25 Int | doubtless had to enrich himself. Machiavelli’s life was not without blemish—
26 Int | his faults may have been, Machiavelli was always an ardent patriot
