12    5|         the imagination.' Is this modesty? Is this a preparation for
13    5|       prejudices, without leaving modesty behind. Make the heart clean,
14    7|                      Chap. VII.~ ~Modesty. - Comprehensively Considered,
15    7|          as a~ ~Sexual Virtue.~ ~ Modesty! Sacred offspring of sensibility
16    7|   distinct modes; and in defining modesty, it appears to me equally
17    7| consciousness of our own dignity. Modesty, in the latter signification
18    7|              Thus, discriminating modesty from humility in one case,
19    7|         fact, is so distinct from modesty, that the most bashful lass,
20    7|   ignorant wretches never had any modesty to lose, when they consigned
21    7|         themselves to infamy; for modesty is a virtue, not a quality.
22    7|       fruit. What a gross idea of modesty had the writer of the following
23    7|         reason must have the most modesty - though a dignified sedateness
24    7|       bashfulness of youth.*~ ~ * Modesty, is the graceful calm virtue
25    7|        from which unsophisticated modesty will naturally flow, the
26    7|           of the behaviour is not modesty, though those who study
27    7|          imagination, and artless modesty will give the finishing
28    7|           with artists - yet such modesty did I meet with, that I
29    7|           absurd rules which make modesty a pharisaical cloak of weakness.
30    7|           if they did not by mock modesty remind them that they were
31    7|           chaste than men, and as modesty is the effect of chastity,
32    7|     whether chastity will produce modesty, though it may propriety
33    7|          expect to meet with more modesty amongst men than women,
34    7|        observation still further, modesty must heartily disclaim,
35    7|     sexual distinction respecting modesty has proved fatal to virtue
36    7|       contrary to reason and true modesty, which, at least, should
37    7|       Gregory's advice respecting modesty, strangely miscalled! for
38    7|    different light. - The want of modesty, which I principally deplore
39    7|        men as the very essence of modesty, though, in fact, its bane;
40    7|   delicacy carries his notions of modesty still further, for neither
41    7|    continually turn with disgust? Modesty must be equally cultivated
42    7|          woman ought to have more modesty than man; but it is not
43    7|          from mistaken notions of modesty, tend very early to inflame
44    7|         the immodesty of affected modesty, that does all the mischief,
45    7|       nature. Not on the score of modesty, but decency; for the care
46    7|       will never gain strength or modesty.~ ~ On this account also,
47    7|     generalizing simple ones; and modesty, by making the understanding
48    7|           is ever the handmaid of modesty. So that were I to name
49    7|      little reason to expect that modesty will take place of bashfulness.
50    7|        kindly with every other as modesty. - It is the pale moon-beam
51    7|          her chastity and acquire modesty, for her body has been called
52    7|        God who requires more than modesty of mien. His eye searcheth
53    7|       chastity must be founded on modesty, and not on worldly prudence;
54    7|          and love will teach them modesty.* There is no need of falsehoods,
55    7|           sisters, really possess modesty, ye must remember that the
56    7|       proper in their season; but modesty, being the child of reason,
57    7|        will be too soft to afford modesty that tranquil retreat, where
58    8|          a claim, on the score of modesty, though her reputation may
59    8|           every virtue. Chastity, modesty, public spirit, and all
60   12|           might have ripened into modesty, at home.~ ~ And what nasty
61   12|        paid to the cultivation of modesty, amongst men, produces great
62   12|          inculcated which produce modesty without those sexual distinctions
63   12|       well-knit joints, grace and modesty should appear. But this
64   12|     knowledge, have not discarded modesty, nor have they always pedantically
65   13|          shew a want of taste and modesty. Ignorant women, forced
66   13|           consequent disregard of modesty, tend to degrade both sexes;
67   13|      sexes; and further, that the modesty of women, characterized
68   13|        reflection of purity, till modesty be universally respected.~ ~
