2. Leo XIII To Scalabrini4
Venerable Brother, Greetings and Apostolic Blessings.
Gladly do we acknowledge the news that you have taken the noble decision to establish in your Episcopal See an Institute of religious men whose firm intention is going to distant lands, especially of America, to bring the support of their sacred ministry to the multitude of Catholic Italians who, compelled by necessity to emigrate from their native land, settle in those regions. In virtue of our Apostolic Office, we have particularly at heart the salvation of souls. Therefore we feel duty-bound to the promotion of what might provide for the spiritual needs of the faithful. Hence, Venerable Brother, we consider your noble decision of the utmost utility. Thus, we immensely appreciate the generosity and zeal of those who, for the love of Christ, consecrate themselves to this holy endeavor.
We are certain that the Bishops of Italy, on account of the deep attachment to religion that distinguishes them, will support this project. If some priests of their dioceses desire to undertake this ministry, they will give
their assent to such generous choice and will support it with an open mind. While we pray Almighty God, from whom every good work comes, to kindly favor your initiative and to send suitable workers in his harvest, we cordially impart the Apostolic Blessing as a sign of our affection for you, Venerable Brother, and for all those united with you in seeking the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
Given in Rome at St. Peter’s, 15 November, 1887, the tenth year of our Pontificate.
