13. Rampolla to Scalabrini21
I hastened to present to the Holy Father the message you sent me with your letter of the 27th of the past month, together with the donations mentioned in it. His Holiness deigned to accept both of them with expressions of deep appreciation, asking me to thank you in his august name for the best wishes and affection you manifested.
As I do so, I am pleased to tell you that His Holiness has wholeheartedly given his apostolic blessing to you, to the missionaries, and to
the Italian emigrants, whom you mentioned, and especially to the givers of the aforementioned donations, as well as to their respective families.
I also take this occasion to inform you that the Holy See has received reports that some of the missionaries mentioned above are promoting liberal ideas in the Americas and in particular the unfortunate booklet of Bishop Bonomelli, a booklet which, as you know, has been disapproved of by the Holy See and by the author himself.22 Hence, the Holy Father, who is quite concerned with this affair, has charged me with seriously calling your attention to this grave matter and asking you to take those energetic measures that will speedily remedy this situation.
As I convey this information to you, I take the occasion to assure you of the personal high esteem I have of you.
Your servant
