         From the Vatican, March 7, 1904

It is painful being attacked by malevolent and slanderous tongues, that don’t spare the holiest people. But bear in peace also this cross, quite assured that here especially those persons are considered for what they are worth.

            I am very sorry to have been caught unaware in granting the implored blessing to the newspaper because I had no doubt that both the Newspaper and the Institute were under the care and supervision of Your Excellency.

            As I expressed orally, I confirm it in writing, that convinced of the good done by you in your first visit to America, I will be very happy if you were able to go back and be of help and comfort to our poor emigrants. My most ardent wish is that God accompany you and give you the most desired consolations.

            Thank you very much for the L.2,000 for Peter’s Pence and with particular affection I implore on all the donors and over you,
