7. Corrigan to Scalabrini25
I have been busy with a pastoral visitation and only now have I had the time to thank you for the kindness shown to my esteemed Secretary.26 He cherishes the memory of Your Excellency and keeps speaking daily about you.
Every day I am worried about our dear Italians. I very much wish to provide them with a national church of their own where they will enjoy full autonomy. This is my firm will. I only have to be a bit prudent so as to secure the necessary means. The pastor of the old Cathedral, who has ten thousand Italians in his parish, is of the same opinion, as is also the Vicar General. Father Marcellino is anxious, but doubtful. But with God’s help, we will succeed, though not perhaps, in the manner the most worthy Father Marcellino thinks.
There are very many difficulties but we are reviewing and considering all aspects, and we will never cease our efforts until the project will be implemented.
Some good men, well experienced in such matters, are now looking for a suitable site for a future church, and we will go ahead as circumstances allow with the greatest speed possible.
In this way we are preparing the house for the priests from Piacenza. With God’s help, Your Excellency and I will do something for the eternal salvation of Italian immigrants. Now I have much more courage than ever.
This evening I cannot write you more. Father Charles will do it for me in a few days.
Meanwhile, with renewed thanks and placing myself at your service I remain,
Your most humble and devoted servant in the Lord,
+Michael Augustine, Archbishop
