31. Corrigan to Scalabrini67

         New York, January 9, 1891

Dearest Bishop:

Your Excellency overwhelms me with kindness and favors. How can I thank you for the two beautiful stoles you sent me as a gift?

The Missionaries, thank God, arrived safe and sound. I like Father Domenico Vicentini very much. The others are going away, I think.68

There are many Albanians here. What can we do for them? I am told that they speak neither Neapolitan nor English. On the other hand, the S. Congregation of the Council, according to the latest circular, excludes in any case the priests of Greek Rite. Would it be possible to obtain some Redemptorists or Jesuits or other religious from those parts of Italy who could administer the sacraments to these poor people? Or, still better, could Your Excellency find some good Calabrian priests who speak these dialects?

Soon, I must write to Your Excellency at greater leisure. At the moment I am extremely busy and cannot find even a free moment.

Meanwhile, I thank you again. I thank God for the good done by the Missionaries and by the Sisters.

I commend myself to Your Excellency, to Canon Mangot and to all the Clergy of the seminary.

            I am, Dearest Bishop,

Your very devoted servant,

Michael Augustine, Archbishop

68 These were the members of the fourth group Bishop Scalabrini had sent to America on December 10, 1890: Fr. Domenico Vicentini, who would have remained in New York, Fr. Paolo Riva, Fr. Pitro Lotti and the lay Brothers Pitro Marinoni and Giovanni Depiazza. Part of this group were also Fr. Domenico Mantese and Fr. Giuseppe Molinari who had returned from Brazil due to ill health.
