8.    Tierney to Scalabrini11

         Hartford, November 7, 1904

My Dear Bishop:

This is to tell you of the death of Fr. Moretti. We buried him from St. Patrick’s Church New Haven. The officers of the Mass were diocesan priests so that the Italian people could see his death was considered a diocesan loss.

Fr. Marenchino will give you all the details of the death. These people are mostly from Southern Italy and have been agitating for a pastor from their section of the country. It is said, I know not how true, that Fr. Ricci has encouraged this agitation. Owing to this I requested Fr. Novati some weeks ago to remove Fr. Ricci. He did so some days ago. Fr. R. came to me and I referred him to Fr. Novati or to your Lordship.

The people desire to have Fr. Ricci because he is a Neapolitan. A committee of the people called on me some time ago and will call again today. I shall explain matters to them and I think they will be more reasonable in the future. We need more priests in N. Haven. There ought to be at least two at each church. At each of these churches we ought to have a priest mentally and physically strong. The present Pastor of St. Michael’s, Fr. Alussi, is not a strong man. Years ago he left this church through fear of the people. Early this year he desired to return to Italy and now he has concerted to remain for a time. I fear if he has any opposition he will again leave us. The church is nearly completed after the fire. St. Anthony’s Church will be completed next month. Services are now held in the basement of this church.

The children need to be looked after with more zeal. A word from your Lordship to these good Fathers will effect much more than any request of mine.

The three priests ordained in Piacenza this year are doing good work in the diocese. I hope they will do the same.

Thanking your Lordship for all you have done for us and asking a share in your pious prayers, I remain,

Yours Sincerely in Christ,

M. Tierney, Bishop of Hartford
