16. Scalabrini to Corrigan40

         Piacenza September 27, 1888

Your Excellency,

The bearer of this letter is Professor Giacomo Bivaschi, a dear former student of mine from the Seminary of Como. He is a learned person, knows various languages well, and, more important, to his learning he joins a deep and solid piety.

He has decided to leave Italy and settle in America. Allow me to recommend him highly to the high consideration of Your Excellency. I can assure you that you will not have any reason to regret the favor you may accord him. In fact, I am convinced that if some school should employ him as a teacher, as it would be desirable, such school would only be happy for the precious acquisition. I will consider any favor offered him as done to me.

Then, most esteemed Archbishop, I am waiting for a note in answer to my last letter so that I may prepare in time the priests to be sent there for the founding of the new parish.

With renewed sentiments of my affectionate esteem, I remain

Your Excellency’s devoted confrere,

Gio. Battista, Bishop of Piacenza
