New York, October 4, 1888
Most Reverend Excellency,
I am happy to inform you that your very esteemed letter of September 7 has been received and to assure you that your Missionaries in this Diocese are full of zeal and that they give me very great comfort and consolation. Then the Lord, father of mercies, is visibly helping them.
They will tell you of their project to build a great church. Of course, they have my full consent. The only remaining issue concerns the site. Naturally they want to find a central place for the immigrants so they may serve their needs more effectively.
As for me, I am engaged now in the pastoral visitation and cannot find a free moment for myself.
I enclose a check for two thousand lire for the Christopher Columbus Institute to promote this good work and as a sign of my gratitude to Your excellency. Don Carlo presents his respects and greetings and I entrust myself to your devoted prayers.
Your Excellency’s humble and devoted servant,
Michael Augustine, Archbishop of New York
