46. Scalabrini to Corrigan106
Piacenza, October 22, 1893
Most Reverend Excellency:
I have the two letters you recently sent me and I thank you very much for them.
Father Morelli’s case pained me much, also for the suffering it has caused Your Excellency whom I would like everyone to procure nothing but the sweetest consolations.
Now that case is used by malevolent people as an excuse for the most vile attacks against all the Missionaries residing there. Your Excellency would really greatly favor me if you could send me a written declaration, always in case you could do it, stating that the Missionaries are good priests and that you are pleased with them and the little good work which they have so far carried out in your Archdiocese.
As for Father Bandini, I beg you to delay for a while longer any strict measures. I write to see if it is possible to find a way to help him. In any
case, expenses could be limited and also, if you think so, change personnel in order to keep that church opened.
I do not speak about Father Morelli. Perhaps with good intentions, he has done us a great harm. Patience and may God help us!
I recommend myself to your prayers and with deep veneration, I remain
Your very devoted and affectionate confrere,
Gio. Battista Bishop
