60. Corrigan to
Scalabrini130
New York, September 17,
1901
Your Excellency:
Only this evening I received the letter131 written by Your Excellency on the
third of this month from New Haven.
After
my return to the City I wanted to write to Your Excellency but not knowing the
address, I had to wait a few days; now, finally, I can send you a few lines.
I
hope that Your Excellency will be able to spend a few days with me in this
house. Then, the Catholics of the City desire to give you a reception at the
Catholic Club.132
I
remain dearest Monsignor
Your most humble and devoted servant,
Michael Augustine, Archbishop of New York
130 AGS EB 01–07 (Original).

132 The Catholic Club of New York (120 Central
Park South) had as members the prominent Catholics of the City. Bishop
Scalabrini wrote to his Secretary Canon Mangot on the reception offered him:
“Yesterday evening, the Catholic Club of New York gave me a solemn reception,
as they say here. The elite of the aristocracy was present in an immense hall.
The Archbishop accompanied me and wanted at all cost that I take the first
place. The President read me an address in English and then another one was
given in French. I answered with a talk in French, constantly interrupted by
applause. A journalist called it most noble and eloquent. Today all speak about
it. It seemed to me just acceptable, but timely. Well, also this is past.” AGS
AN 01–01/58. Scalabrini to Mangot,
New York, October 16, 1901.
