(Telegram)
Milan, October 3,
1889
Impossible to come today. I will come tomorrow
at five-thirty in the afternoon.
F. Janssens, Archbishop
20 AGS. There is an entry in
Archbishop Janssens’ journal, p. 30, for October 4, 1889, confirming this
visit: “Visit to Bishop Scalabrini of Piacenza.
Most kindly received. He will send two Italian priests.” Then, on p. 32, the
Archbishop adds on December 13, 1889: “Arrived today Rev. Angelo Chiariglione
and Rev. Jacobo Gambera, two priests and two Brothers sent by Bishop
Scalabrini, Bishop of Piacenza, to begin work for the Italians. They are as a
beginning; they have been based on the first story of the Seminary. It is
understood that their ministry will be for the Italians exclusively and for no
others.” Eventually, ministry to the Italian immigrants developed and on August
27, 1892, Archbishop Janssens asked Father Zaboglio for another priest: “I hope
that you will be able to send me another priest to visit the countryside. You
know the need. Yesterday a plantation owner asked my permission to erect a
chapel on his plantation where there are 300 Italians . . . .” (AGS).
