Archival and

Bibliographical Note

The most important study on the person, thought, activities and times of Bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabrini of Piacenza was carried out by the late Mario Francesconi, who for many years worked in the General Archives of the Scalabrinian Congregation in Rome, where all the manuscripts, minutes of letters and letters received by Bishop Scalabrini and relating to his migration activities are preserved (Via Calandrelli, 11 – 00153 Rome). The process of reorganization and computerization of these archives is still ongoing.

In the central archives of the Catholic Church in Rome are also preserved letters and reports that Bishop Scalabrini directed either to the popes or to the various dicasteries of the Roman Curia, in particular to the Secretariat of State and to the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, now called the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The late Gianfuasto Rosoli supported a systematic research of these archives for material regarding migration, and the results have been published, mostly in the journal Studi Emigrazione that he directed for many years. Specific articles include:

Pizzorusso, Giovanni, “La ‘Nuova Serie’ dell’Archivio di Propaganda Fide e la storia degli Italiani in Nord America,” Il Veltro, 34:1–2 (1990), pp. 67–85.

(1893–1922),” Studi Emigrazione, 120 (December, 1995), pp. 604–772.

In the latter reference, the archives of some religious orders with activities with immigrants are also included, such as the Dominicans, Jesuits, and Salesians.

To date, the detailed inventories published by Studi Emigrazione remain the most useful and informative source for the study of the action of the Church among immigrants in the Americas.

An annotated listing of archives dealing with the work of the Church with immigrants is also found in Silvano M. Tomasi and Edward C. Stibili, Italian Americans and Religion: An Annotated Bibliography, second edition (New York: Center for Migration Studies, 1992).
