PREFACE.
----
THE present volume grew naturally
out of my special study of the APOLOGETICUS of Tertullian when preparing an
annotated edition for the Delegates of the Clarendon Press. It is hoped that
this translation may be helpful to Theological students who are at work upon
the original text, and for them it has been more particularly prepared. Yet it
is not unlikely that there will also be some English readers interested in the
early records of Christianity who may be glad to possess this famous apologetic
tract of the second century, and to whom its presentation in an English dress
will be acceptable. The translation is made from the text of the Clarendon
Press edition (Oxford : 1889).
