 1 Intro|      is not the only good, and pain the only evil? Protagoras
 2 Intro|      evils because they end in pain, and pains are goods because
 3 Intro|        greater, or the greater pain to the less, except from
 4  Prot|        lives well who lives in pain and grief?~He does not.~
 5  Prot|      by anger, or pleasure, or pain, or love, or perhaps by
 6  Prot| knowledge they are overcome by pain, or pleasure, or some of
 7  Prot|     diseases do they not cause pain? and in causing poverty
 8  Prot|      poverty do they not cause pain;—they would agree to that
 9  Prot|     except because they end in pain and rob us of other pleasures:—
10  Prot|        immediate suffering and pain; or because, afterwards,
11  Prot|       and get rid of and avert pain? Are you looking to any
12  Prot|      standard but pleasure and pain when you call them good?’—
13  Prot|  pleasure as a good, and avoid pain as an evil?’~He assented.~‘

15  Prot|  similar way of speaking about pain? You call pain a good when
16  Prot|  speaking about pain? You call pain a good when it takes away

19  Prot|        explained as other than pain, or good as other than pleasure,
20  Prot|      pleasure which is without pain? If you are, and if you
21  Prot|        not end in pleasure and pain, hear the consequences:—
22  Prot|      the names of pleasure and pain for good and evil, and say,
23  Prot|       relations of pleasure to pain other than excess and defect,
24  Prot|       from future pleasure and pain’—To that I should reply:
