SEALL THALL TIGHINN BHON EAR

This is a Christmas hymn. It was composed by the Rev. John MacLeod, a minister of the Church of Scotland, who served many years in Oban. He was a noted Gaelic scholar and well loved by those who knew him. The melody is THE DARK ISLAND which was composed by Iain MacLachlan, Benbecula.

This is a loose translation of the
hymn. It's purpose is simply to give
the English sense of the words.

1.
Seall thall tighinn bhon ear le sealladh bho Nèamh,
Tha daoine nan cabhaig a'leantainn na rèilt;
San stàball le leanabh tha Moire cho sèimh -
Am prasaich gun ghearain, gràdh Dhè dhuinn.

Sèisd
O reult, thoir dhomh soillses an oidhch' fas dorcha,
Mi creidsinn do gheallaidh, mo thaic thus mo threòir;
Cuir solas air slighe a rithist led ghlòir,
Ach am faic mi am prasaich do ghràdh dhomh.

2.
Thàinig ainglean gu talamh le moladh is seinn,
Air mointich gach cìobair le chaoraich am faing;
Theich cadal is leum iad, le aoibhneas toirt taing,
Is ruith iad nan deann chun an stàbail.

3.
Cha sguir ainglean a chaoidh a moladh a ghràidh,
San reult bidh soillse a dh' oidhches a :
Bidh 'm fonn ud nan cluasans nan cridhe gu bràth -
Am prasaich, san stàball, gràdh Dhè dhuinn.

1.
Behold from the East comes a sign from heaven,
People hurriedly following the star;
In the stable Mary is at peace with her child -
in a manger without complaining, God's love for us.

chorus
O Star shine on me the day is darkening,
I believe in your promise, you're my help and my guide;
Light up the way again with your glory,
That I may see the stable of your love for me.

Angels came to earth with praise and song,
On hillside, each shepherd with his gathered sheep;
Sleep left them and they leapt with joy and thanksgiving,
Quickly they made for the stable.

Never will angels cease praising your love,
The star will shine by day and night:
The joyous sound will be forever in their ears and hearts -
The cradle in the stable, the love of God for us.

Na faclan: an t-Urr. Iain MacLeoid
Am fonn (An t-Eilean Dorcha): Iain MacLachlainn
