A SHÀCRAMAID, THA SINN LE ÙMHLACHD

A SHÀCRAMAID, THA SINN LE ÙMHLACHD, is based on the hymn TANTUM ERGO and has the same melody. In the past this hymn would be sung during Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The hymn was composed by St. Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274) and translated into English by J. M. Neale & others. It was translated into Gaelic by D. C. MacPherson.

This is a loose translation of the
hymn. It's purpose is simply to give
the English sense of the words.

A Shàcramaid, tha sinn le ùmhlachd
Toirt dhut adhraidh, cliù is glòir;
Reachd an t-Seann Lagh, chuireadh cùl ris -
San lagh ùr tha'n fhìor-bheachdchòrr;
Ged nach tuigear ler ceud-fàthan,
Creideamh cha dèan fàillinn oirnn. Amen.

O Sacrament, we bow before thee
Offering you worship, honour and glory;
The old law's power, no longer effective -
The new law is a truly extraordinary guide
Although incomprehensible to our reason,
Faith will not fail us. Amen.

Glòir don Athairs glòir don Mhac,
'S glòir co-cheart don Spiorad Naomh;
Cliù is aighear, onair is neart,
Slàint is beannachadh a chaoidh;
Trìonaid chumhachdach nam feart
Molamaid mu seachs mar aon.

Glory to the Father, glory to the son,
The same glory to the Holy Spirit;
praise and joy, honour and strength,
Health and blessing for ever;
Almighty Trinity of countless attributes
May we praise you as Three and One.
