GLOIR GU ROBH DO DH'IOSA

This hymn is a version of GLORY BE TO JESUS and it has the same melody. The author of the English version was Edward Caswall. The English version was a translation the Latin. The Gaelic version was translated by Duncan Matheson.

This is a loose translation of the hymn. It's purpose is simply to give
the English sense of the words.

Glòir gu robh do dh'Iosa,
Dh'fhuiling air ar sgàth,
Dòrtadh Fhala phrìseil -
Deuchainn mhòr is cràdh.

Glory be to Jesus,
Who suffered for us,
Pouring his precious blood -
great and painful torment

Choisinn Fhuil-san tròcair,
Sòlas dhuinn is bàidh;
Dh' fhosgleadh tobar glòrmhor,
Stòras gràidh nach tràigh.

His blood won mercy
comfort and compassion for us;
A glorious well was opened
An abundance of unfailing love.

S beannachd i don t-saoghal,
Saors' o bhinn a bhàis;
Beath' don chinne-daonnda,
Adhbhar luaidh gu bràth.

It is a blessing on the world
free from the judgement of death;
Life to mankind
Cause of everlasting praise.

Dh' èigh fuil Abeil, ‘g iarraidh
Diogh'ltais, ‘s b' àrd a glaodh;
Achs e rinn Fuil Iosa
Iobairt-rèite chaomh.

The blood of Abel calls, demanding
Vengence, and loud the clamour;
But Jesus's blood has made
an atoning compassionate sacrifice

Thig i oirnn na frasan,
Glanaidh i ar crìdh;
Chì is teichidh Sàtan,
Gabhail oillt is crith.

It will come upon us as showers
It will clean our heart;
It will see the flight of Satan
Taking awful fright

Nuair on domhain dh' èireas
Laoidhean molaidh suas,
an armailt Nèamhaidh
Seinn is caithream buaidh.

When from the earth will rise
Songs of praise,
The powers of heaven will
sing songs and make victory shouts

Togaibh suas gu h-òirdheirc
Orain air gach taobh,
Sìor thoirt cliù is mòrachd
S glòir don Fhuil ro naomh.

Gloriously offer up
Songs on every side,
Giving praise and great honour
and glory to the most holy blood.
