MOLAMAID IOSA

LET US PRAISE JESUS is an original composition by Donald John MacDonald, the bard from Peninerine, South Uist. The melody is by Father Roderick MacNeil and is available in the hymn book, Seinnibh dhan Tighearna.

This is a loose translation of the
hymn. It's purpose is simply to give
the English sense of the words.

Molamaid Iosa
Le briathran neo-ghann,
A shaor sinns a shàbhail
Le bhàs air a' Chrann;
A dh'èirich on uaigh,
A' toirt buaidh air a' bhàs -
Mo chrìdh' tha cur thairis
Le beannachdan dhà.

Let us praise Jesus
lavishly with words
who redeemed and saved us
through his death on the Cross;
Who rose from the tomb
conquering death -
My heart is overflowing
with blessings on him.

O Iosa ar Dia Geal
A chruthaich an saogh' l,
A dh' fhuiling an Crann-ceusaidh
An èirig chlann-daoin ;
A dh' fhuiling a bhith reubte
Le reubairean dàn ,
S a dh' fhosgail dhuinn seòlaid
Gu beò-bhith nan gràs.

O Jesus, our Radiant God
who made the world,
who suffered crucifixion
on behalf of mankind;
Who endured intense suffering
(at the hands of) bold violent men
and who opened a passage for us
to the life of grace.

Nach prìsei1 an t-ionmhas
A dh' fhàg E dha shluagh,
Fhuil fhèin agus fheòil
Gus ar beò-bhith bhith buan;
Na earbaibh à mòrachd
S à sòlas an t-saogh il -
An coimeas ri ghlòir-san
Tha n t-òr agaibh faoin.

How priceless the legacy
he left for his people,
His own blood and flesh
that our life be eternal;
Don't trust in greatness
or in the pleasures of the world -
Compared to his glory
your gold is but dross
