NULL GUD CHRIDHE NAOMH

This is a very popular hymn in the Islands. It is a version of O TAKE ME TO THY SACRED HEART and has the same melody. It is said that it was translated into Gaelic by Father John MacMillan of Barra (1880 - 1951)

This is a loose translation of the
hymn. It's purpose is simply to give
the English sense of the words.

O thoir mi null gud Chrìdhe naomh,
Is cum mi'n tasgadh teann;
O iarr air m'anam siùbhlach truagh
A dhachaigh bhuan bhith ann.
O Iosa tha do Chrìdhe naomh
Ciùin, caomhach, gaolach, còir;
Cha bhrist Thu spiorad an fhir fhaoin
No misneachd an fhir bhròin.

O take me to thy Sacred Heart
And hold me tightly there
O ask my poor wandering soul
to have there its abiding home.
O Jesus your heart is holy
Meek, friendly, loving, kind;
You will not break the foolish person's spirit
Nor the courage of the sad person

O Mhoire, leis a ghaol gun cheann
Thug Crìdhe Chrìosd dhut fhèin,
Mo dhachaigh deònaich beò no marbh
Bhithn Cridhe gaolach Dhè.
O Iosa, fosgail suas do Chrìdh ,
Is gheibh mi fasgadh ann:
Tha m' anam sgìth de ghlòir gun bhrìgh,
S le peacadh brònach, fann.

O Mary, with the unbounded love
That the heart of Christ gave you,
Grant that my home alive or dead
Be in the loving heart of God.
O Jesus, open up your heart,
And I'll find shelter there;
My soul is tired of glory without substance
And with sad weak sin.

Chan fhaigh mi fois ged dh' iarrainn tàmh
An cùisean fann, neo-bhuan;
Tha aon Chridh ann as fhiach mo ghràdh -
Chan fhas an Crìdh sin fuar.
O Iosa, thig gam iarraidh tràth -
Tha fadal orm ad dhèidh;
Tha cabhag orm gun tig an
A bhios mi làmh riut fhèin.

I will not find rest though I seek it
In weak passing things;
There is one heart that deserves my love -
That heart will never cool.
O Jesus come seek me soon -
I'm impatient for you;
I'm looking foward to the day
that I will be beside you.
