O IOSA BI'N COMHNAIDH

This hymn is an original composition by Donald John MacDonald, the Peninerine bard. The melody is also an original composition by Ishbel T. MacDonald. Words and music can be found in the hymn book SEINNIBH DHAN TIGHEARNA.

This is a loose translation of the
hymn. It's purpose is simply to give
the English sense of the words.

O Iosa, bi'n còmhnaidh
Air m'aire gach uair
Mo chobhair, mo chridhe,
Mo bheatha, mo dhuais
Bi rium an dlùth-chomann,
Nam inntinn a ghnàth,
Is treòraich mo cheuman
Le èifeachd do ghràis.

O Jesus, be always
On my mind each hour
My help, my heart,
my life, my reward.
Be my close companion
forever in my mind
And guide my steps
With the power of your grace

As t' aonais, O Iosa,
Mo bheatha gun stàth;
As t' aonais, O Iosa,
Tha m' fhoghar gun ghràn;
As t' aonais, O Iosa,
Mo ghnìomhan gun fheum -
O soillsich mo ròidean
Le lòchran do chrèid.

Without you, O Jesus,
my life is without substance;
Without you, O Jesus,
my harvest is without grain;
Without you, O Jesus,
my works are useless
O shine on my ways
with the lamp of your faith

O Iosa, mo Shlànair,
Na fàg mison uair;
Nad reul bi dhomh, deàrrsach
An sgàthan mo smuain -
S Tu m' acarsaid shàbhailt
Bho ghàbhadh nan stuagh;
Mo dhìdean, mo chombaist,
Mo chompanach buan.

O Jesus, my Saviour,
Don't leave me for one hour;
As a star for me, shine
on the mirror of my mind -
You are my safe anchorage
from the storms of the waves;
my protection, my guide,
My faithful companion.

Dèan dachaigh nam chridhe,
O Iosa, mo ghaol;
Dèan dachaigh nam thuigse,
Nam mheomhair, nam smaoin
Biodh tainm-sa gu sìorraidh
Air bilean mo bheòil -
O Iosa, na trèig mi
rèis mo bhith-bheò.

Make a home in my heart,
O Jesus, my love;
Make a home in my understanding,
in my memory, in my thoughts
Make your name for ever be
on the lips of my mouth -
O Jesus, don't abandon me
throughout the journey of my life.
