 38  I,       II   |            slaughter a cow 2,' they said, 'Art thou making a jest
 39  I,       II   |          thou making a jest of us?' Said he, 'I seek refuge with
 40  I,       II   |            one of the unwise.' They said, 'Then pray thy Lord for
 41  I,       II   |           as ye are bid.' [65] They said, 'Pray now thy Lord to show
 42  I,       II   |             upon her.'~ ~Again they said, 'Pray thy Lord to show
 43  I,       II   |            no blemish on her.' They said, 'Now hast thou brought
 44  I,       II   |        which ye had hidden, then we said, 'Strike him with part of
 45  I,       II   |   resolution and hear;'~ ~ ./. they said, 'We hear but disobey;'
 46  I,       II   |            taught no one until they said, 'We are but a temptation,
 47  I,       II   |           and he fulfilled them, He said, 'Verily, I will set thee
 48  I,       II   |             high priest 1 for men.' Said he, 'And of my seed?' God
 49  I,       II   |           he, 'And of my seed?' God said, 'My covenant touches not
 50  I,       II   |          men, and a sanctuary, and (said) take the station of Abraham 3
 51  I,       II   |        adore.'~ ~[120] When Abraham said, 'Lord, make this a town
 52  I,       II   |            and the last day!' (God) said, 'And he who misbelieves,
 53  I,       II   |    righteous.~ ~[125] When his Lord said to him, 'Be resigned,' he
 54  I,       II   |           to him, 'Be resigned,' he said, 'I am resigned' unto the
 55  I,       II   |           was facing death, when he said to his sons, 'What will
 56  I,       II   |         serve when I am gone?' They said, 'We will serve thy God,
 57  I,       II   |            know.~ ~[165] When it is said to them, 'Follow what God

139  I,        V   |           of Mary;' but the Messiah said, 'O children of Israel!

180  I,      VII   |          see you in obvious error.' Said he, 'O my people! there
181  I,      VII   |            and we drowned those who said our signs were lies, verily,
182  I,      VII   |            their brother Hûd 2, who said, 'O my people! serve God,
183  I,      VII   |             will ye not then fear?' Said the chiefs of those who
184  I,      VII   |          art of the liars.' [65] He said, 'O my people! there is
185  I,      VII   |         haply ye may prosper!' They said, 'Hast thou come to us that
186  I,      VII   |             who tell the truth!' He said, 'There shall fall upon
187  I,      VII   |       hindermost parts of those who said our signs were lies and
188  I,      VII   |           their brother Zâli'h, who said, 'O my people! worship God;
189  I,      VII   |           the land, despoiling it.' Said the chiefs of those who
190  I,      VII   |           sent from his Lord?' They said, 'We do believe in that
191  I,      VII   |             with which he is sent.' Said those who were big with
192  I,      VII   |           bidding of their Lord and said, 'O Zâli'h! bring us what
193  I,      VII   |           turned away from them and said, 'O my people! I did preach
194  I,      VII   |     advisers 1.'~ ~And Lot, when he said to his people, 'Do ye approach

211  I,      VII   |             Moses and Aaron!' [120] Said Pharaoh, 'Do ye believe
212  I,      VII   |       crucify you altogether!' They said, 'Verily, we unto our Lord
213  I,      VII   |          chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, 'Will ye leave Moses and
214  I,      VII   |           leave thee and thy gods?' Said he, 'We will have their
215  I,      VII   |      triumphant over them.'~ ~[125] Said Moses unto his people, '
216  I,      VII   |           for those who fear.' They said, 'We have been hurt before
217  I,      VII   |        since thou hast come to us.' Said he, 'It may be that your
218  I,      VII   |           to them a good thing they said, 'This is ours;' and if
219  I,      VII   |           them know not.~ ~And they said, 'Whatever thou dost bring
220  I,      VII   |          upon them the plague, they said, 'O Moses! call upon thy
221  I,      VII   |           in the sea, for that they said our signs were lies and
222  I,      VII   |         devoted to their idols, and said, 'O Moses! make for us a
223  I,      VII   |             god as they have gods.' Said he, 'Verily, ye are ignorant
224  I,      VII   |          which they have done.~ ~He said, 'Other than God then do
225  I,      VII   |             forty nights. And Moses said unto his brother Aaron, '
226  I,      VII   |             Lord spake unto him, he said, 'O my Lord! show me,-that
227  I,      VII   |             I may look on thee!' He said, 'Thou canst not see me;
228  I,      VII   |         when he came to himself, he said, 'Celebrated be thy praise!
229  I,      VII   |             who are resigned.'~ ~He said, 'O Moses! verily, I have
230  I,      VII   |          that is be-cause they have said our signs are lies and have
231  I,      VII   |          they had gone astray, they said, 'Verily, if our Lord have

234  I,      VII   |            unjust people.' [150] He said, 'O Lord! pardon me and
235  I,      VII   |             earthquake took them he said, 'O my Lord! hadst Thou
236  I,      VII   |           are guided unto Thee.' He said, 'My punishment-with it
237  I,      VII   |          wronged.~ ~And when it was said unto them, 'Dwell in this

291  I,       XI   |             with glad tidings; they said, 'Peace!' He said, 'Peace

319  I,      XII   |           or a grievous torment?'~ ~Said he, 'She desired me for
320  I,      XII   |           shirt rent from behind he said, 'This is one of your tricks;
321  I,      XII   |           30] And women in the city said, 'The wife of the prince
322  I,      XII   |            of them a knife; and she said, 'Come forth to them!' And
323  I,      XII   |          And when they saw him they said, 'Great God!' and cut their
324  I,      XII   |           and cut their hands 1 and said, 'God forbid! This is no
325  I,      XII   |           but an honourable angel.' Said she, 'This is he concerning
326  I,      XII   |         surely be among the small!' Said he, 'My Lord! Prison is
327  I,      XII   |             with him two young men. Said one of them, 'Verily, I
328  I,      XII   |       pressing wine.' And the other said, 'Verily, I see myself bearing
329  I,      XII   |            those who do good.'~ ~He said, 'There shall not come to
330  I,      XII   |           for a decision!'~ ~And he said to him whom he thought would
331  I,      XII   |            a few years.~ ~ ./. Then said the king, 'Verily, I see
332  I,      XII   |           vision ye can expound!'~ ~Said they, 'Confused dreams,
333  I,      XII   |          had escaped of those twain said,-remembering after a while, - '
334  I,      XII   |           they then may know!'~ ~He said, 'Ye shall sow for seven
335  I,      XII   |         shall press 1.'~ ~[50] Then said the king, 'Bring him to
336  I,      XII   |           messenger came to him, he said, Go back to thy lord, and
337  I,      XII   |            their craftiness!"'~ ~He said, 'What was your design when
338  I,      XII   |        Joseph for his person?' They said, 'God~ ~ ./. forbid! we
339  I,      XII   |             we know no bad of him.' Said the wife of the prince, '
340  I,      XII   |          tell the truth.'~ ~'That' (said Joseph) 'was that he might
341  I,      XII   |           merciful!'~ ~And the king said, 'Bring him to me. I will
342  I,      XII   |           he had spoken with him he said, 'Verily, to-day thou art
343  I,      XII   |          place of trust.'~ ~[55] He said, 'Place me over the treasures
344  I,      XII   |             with their equipment he said, 'Bring me a brother that
345  I,      XII   |            ye come nigh me.'~ ~They said, 'We will desire him of
346  I,      XII   |       surely do it.'~ ~ ./. Then he said to his young men, 'Put their
347  I,      XII   |      returned to their father, they said, 'O our father! Measure
348  I,      XII   |             him we will keep!'~ ~He said, 'Shall I entrust you with
349  I,      XII   |          chattels restored to them. Said they, 'O our father! What
350  I,      XII   |       that-a small measure 2.'~ ~He said, 'I will by no means send
351  I,      XII   |          given him their compact he said, 'God over what ye say has
352  I,      XII   |           say has charge.'~ ~And he said, 'O my sons! enter not by
353  I,      XII   |       brother to stay with him, and said, 'Verily, I am thy brother-then
354  I,      XII   |             ye are thieves!'~ ~They said, approaching them, 'What
355  I,      XII   |         What is it that ye miss?'~ ~Said they, 'We miss the goblet
356  I,      XII   |          guarantee thereof,'~ ~They said, 'By God! Ye knew we came
357  I,      XII   |           were not thieves.'~ ~They said, 'And what shall be the
358  I,      XII   |           ye be liars?'~ ~[75] They said, 'The recompense thereof
359  I,      XII   |            is one who knows.~ ~They said, 'If he has stolen, a brother
360  I,      XII   |           disclosed it not to them. Said he, 'Ye are in a bad case,
361  I,      XII   |           what ye describe.'~ ~They said, 'O prince! Verily, he has
362  I,      XII   |            of those who do good.'~ ~Said he, '(I seek) refuge in
363  I,      XII   |       retired to consult privately. Said the eldest of them, 'Do
364  I,      XII   |       verily, we tell the truth.'~ ~Said he, 'Nay, your souls have
365  I,      XII   |           turned away from them and said, 'O my~ ~ ./. lament for
366  I,      XII   |    repressed (his woe).~ ~[85] They said, 'By God! thou wilt not
367  I,      XII   |             of those who perish!'~ ~Said he, 'I only complain of
368  I,      XII   |            entered in unto him they said, 'O prince! distress has
369  I,      XII   |       rewards the charitable.'~ ~He said, 'Do ye know what ye did
370  I,      XII   |         were ignorant?'~ ~[90] They said, 'Art thou then indeed Joseph?'
371  I,      XII   |             then indeed Joseph?' He said, 'I am Joseph, and this
372  I,      XII   |          those who do good!'~ ~They said, 'By God! God has chosen
373  I,      XII   |          indeed were sinners.'~ ~He said, 'No reproach against you
374  I,      XII   |      caravan departed, their father said, 'Verily, I find the smell
375  I,      XII   |            I dote!'~ ~ ./. 95] They said, 'By God! thou art in thy
376  I,      XII   |            was restored to sight.~ ~Said he, 'Did I not tell you
377  I,      XII   |          which ye know not?'~ ~They said, 'O our father! ask pardon
378  I,      XII   |              we were sinners!'~ ~He said, 'I will ask pardon for
379  I,      XII   |        father to stay with him, and said, 'Enter ye into Egypt, if
380  I,      XII   |        before him adoring.~ ~And he said, 'O my sire! This is the
381  I,      XIV   |          grateful one.~ ~When Moses said to his people, 'Remember
382  I,      XIV   |       torment is severe!' And Moses said, 'If ye misbelieve, ye and
383  I,      XIV   |             into their mouths 2 and said, 'Verily, we disbelieve
384  I,      XIV   |            call us!' Their apostles said, 'Is there doubt about God,
385  I,      XIV   |             appointed time.'~ ~They said, 'Ye are but mortals like
386  I,      XIV   |        authority!'~ ~Their apostles said unto them, 'We are only~ ~ ./. 
387  I,      XIV   |           And those who misbelieved said to their apostles, 'We will
388  I,      XIV   |      ungrateful.~ ~And when Abraham said, 'My Lord, make this land 1
389  I,       XV   |              15] then also had they said, 'Our eyesight is only intoxicated;
390  I,       XV   |           fire.~ ~And when thy Lord said to the angels, Verily, I
391  I,       XV   |        among those who adored.~ ~He said, 'O Iblîs! what ails thee
392  I,       XV   |            those who adore?'~ ~ ./. Said he, 'I would not adore a
393  I,       XV   |            wrought into form.'~ ~He said, 'Then get thee forth therefrom,
394  I,       XV   |             the day of judgment.'~ ~Said he, 'O my Lord! respite
395  I,       XV   |           they shall be raised.' He said, 'Then, verily, thou art
396  I,       XV   |            of the noted time.'~ ~He said, 'O my Lord! for that Thou
397  I,       XV   |       amongst them as are sincere.' Said He, 'This is a right way
398  I,       XV   |             entered in unto him and said, 'Peace!' he said, 'Verily,
399  I,       XV   |           him and said, 'Peace!' he said, 'Verily, we are afraid
400  I,       XV   |            are afraid of you.' They said, 'Be not afraid! verily,
401  I,       XV   |       tidings of a knowing boy.' He said, 'Do ye give me this glad
402  I,       XV   |            tidings then!' [55] They said, 'We give the glad tidings
403  I,       XV   |           of those who despair!' He said, 'Who would despair of the
404  I,       XV   |             save those who err?' He said, 'What is your business,
405  I,       XV   |              O ye messengers?' They said, 'Verily, we are sent unto
406  I,       XV   |          came unto Lot's family, he said, 'Verily, ye are a people
407  I,       XV   |         whom I recognise not.' They said, 'Nay, but we have come
408  I,       XV   |          came, glad at the tidings. Said he, 'Verily, these are my
409  I,       XV   |          not to shame.'~ ~[70] They said, 'Have we not forbidden
410  I,       XV   |         everybody in the world?' He said, 'Here are~ ~ ./. my daughters,
411  I,      XVI   |             pride!~ ~And when it is said to them, 'What is it that

422 II,     XVII   |       disbelieved in our signs, and said, 'What! when we are bones
423 II,     XVII   |           came to them, and Pharaoh said to him, 'Verily, I think
424 II,     XVII   |             Moses! enchanted.'~ ~He said, 'Well didst thou know that
425 II,     XVII   |             all.~ ~And after him we said to the children of Israel, '
426 II,    XVIII   |            resorted to the cave and said, 'O our Lord! bring us mercy
427 II,    XVIII   |              when they stood up and said, 'Our Lord is the Lord of
428 II,    XVIII   |             for then we should have said an extravagant thing.~ ~ ./. 
429 II,    XVIII   |         long have ye tarried?' They said, 'We have tarried a day
430 II,    XVIII   |             or part of a day.' They said, 'Your Lord knows best your
431 II,    XVIII   |        concerning their affair, and said, 'Build a building over
432 II,    XVIII   |           prevailed in their affair said, 'We will surely make a

434 II,    XVIII   |         them; and he had fruit, and said unto his fellow, who was

449 II,    XVIII   |             bark, he scuttled it.~ ~Said he, 'Hast thou scuttled
450 II,    XVIII   |        produced a strange thing.'~ ~Said he, 'Did I not tell thee,
451 II,    XVIII   |           have patience with me?'~ ~Said he, 'Rebuke me not for forgetting,
452 II,    XVIII   |          killed him. And he (Moses) said, 'Hast thou killed a pure
453 II,    XVIII   |             an unheard-of thing.'~ ~Said he, 'Did I not tell thee,
454 II,    XVIII   |           patience with me?'~ ~[75] Said he, 'If I ask thee about
455 II,    XVIII   |              and he set it upright. Said (Moses), 'Hadst thou pleased
456 II,    XVIII   |             had a hire for this.'~ ~Said he, 'This is the parting
457 II,    XVIII   |        thereat a people.'~ ~[85] We said, 'O DHu 'l Qarnâin! thou
458 II,    XVIII   |        people, or treat them well.' Said he, 'As for him who does
459 II,    XVIII   |      understand~ ~ ./. speech. They said, 'O DHu 'l Qarnâin! verily,
460 II,    XVIII   |             and them a rampart?' He said, 'What my Lord hath established
461 II,    XVIII   |            the two mountain sides.' Said he, 'Blow until it makes
462 II,    XVIII   |          until it makes it a fire.' Said he, 'Bring me, that I may
463 II,    XVIII   |         they could not tunnel it.~ ~Said he, 'This is a mercy from
464 II,      XIX   |         Lord with a secret calling. Said he, 'My Lord! verily, my
465 II,      XIX   |        namesake of his before 1.'~ ~Said he, 'My Lord! how can I
466 II,      XIX   |             decrepitude?'~ ~[10] He said, 'Thus says thy Lord, It
467 II,      XIX   |           yet thou wast nothing.'~ ~Said he, 'O my Lord! make for
468 II,      XIX   |             make for me a sign.' He said, 'Thy sign is that thou

470 II,      XIX   |       semblance of a well-made man. Said she, 'Verily, I take refuge

493 II,       XX   |        creation, then guided it.'~ ~Said he, 'And what of the former
494 II,       XX   |             former generations?' He said, 'The knowledge of them
495 II,       XX   |         them lies and did refuse.~ ~Said. he, 'Hast thou come to
496 II,       XX   |            either;-a fair place.'~ ~Said he, 'Let your appointment
497 II,       XX   |         tricks, and then he came.~ ~Said Moses to them, 'Woe to you!
498 II,       XX   |          secretly talked it over.~ ~Said they, 'These twain are certainly
499 II,       XX   |          who has the upper hand.'~ ~Said they, 'O Moses! either thou

506 II,       XX   |             mightest be pleased.'~ ~Said He, 'Verily, we have tried
507 II,       XX   |          wrathful, grieving!~ ~ ./. Said he, 'O my people! did not
508 II,       XX   |         promise to me?'~ ~[90] They said, 'We have not broken our
509 II,       XX   |         calf which lowed.' And they said, 'This is your god and the
510 II,       XX   |            obey my bidding.'~ ~They said, 'We will not cease to pay
511 II,       XX   |           Moses come back to us.'~ ~Said he, 'O Aaron! what prevented
512 II,       XX   |         against my bidding?'~ ~[95] Said he, 'O son of my mother!
513 II,       XX   |           not observed my word."'~ ~Said he, 'What was thy design,
514 II,       XX   |             thy design, O Sâmarîy?' Said he, 'I beheld what they
515 II,       XX   |            soul induced me.'~ ~ ./. Said he, 'Then get thee gone;
516 II,       XX   |            him.~ ~[115] And when we said to the angels, 'Adore~ ~ ./. 
517 II,       XX   |          Iblîs, who refused. And we said, 'O Adam! verily, this is
518 II,       XX   |             devil whispered to him. Said he, 'O Adam! shall I guide
519 II,       XX   |        towards him, and guided him. Said he, 'Go down, ye twain,
520 II,       XX   |          before it, they would have said, 'Unless Thou hadst sent
521 II,      XXI   |               My Lord knows what is said in the heavens and the earth,
522 II,      XXI   |             ye will be questioned.' Said they, 'O woe is us! verily,
523 II,      XXI   |          about him we knew. When he said to his father and to his
524 II,      XXI   |             which ye pay devotion?' Said they, 'We found our fathers
525 II,      XXI   |         fathers serving them.' [55] Said he, 'Both you and your fathers
526 II,      XXI   |             in obvious error.' They said, 'Dost thou come to us with
527 II,      XXI   |            of those who play?'~ ~He said, 'Nay, but your Lord is
528 II,      XXI   |            refer it to that.~ ~[60] Said they, 'Who has done this
529 II,      XXI   |           of the wrong-doers!' They said, 'We heard a youth mention
530 II,      XXI   |           who is called Abraham.'~ ~Said they, 'Then bring him before
531 II,      XXI   |          they will bear witness.'~ ~Said they, 'Was it thou who did
532 II,      XXI   |            to our gods, O Abraham?' Said he, 'Nay, it was this largest
533 II,      XXI   |         they came to themselves and said, 'Verily, ye are the wrong-doers.'
534 II,      XXI   |         that these cannot speak.'~ ~Said he, 'Will ye then serve,
535 II,      XXI   |           have ye then no sense?'~ ~Said they, 'Burn him, and help
536 II,      XXI   |           are going to do so!'~ ~We said, 'O fire! be thou cool and
537 II,      XXI   |          him against the people who said our signs were lies; verily,~ ~ ./. 
538 II,      XXI(1)|            David and Solomon, David said that the owner of the field
539 II,     XXII   |    undeservedly, only for that they said, 'Our Lord is God;' and
540 II,    XXIII   |             unto his people, and he said, 'O my people! worship God,
541 II,    XXIII   |             do ye then not fear?'~ ~Said the chiefs of those who
542 II,    XXIII   |          bide then for a season.'~ ~Said he, 'Help me, for they call
543 II,    XXIII   |           will ye then not fear?'~ ~Said the chiefs of his people
544 II,    XXIII   |           we believe not in him!'~ ~Said he, 'My Lord! help me, for
545 II,    XXIII   |          for they call me liar!' He said, Within a little they will
546 II,    XXIII   |          haughty people.~ ~And they said, 'Shall we believe two mortals
547 II,    XXIII   |           no sense?~ ~Nay, but they said like that which those of
548 II,    XXIII   |             of yore did say.~ ~They said, 'What! when we have become
549 II,    XXIII   |        signs recited to you? and ye said that they were lies!' They
550 II,    XXIII   |             sect of my servants who said, Our Lord! we believe, so
551 II,     XXIV   |             given you, and if it be said to you, 'Go back!' then
552 II,      XXV   |           the lurch!'~ ~The Apostle said, 'O my Lord! verily, my
553 II,      XXV   |                Those who misbelieve said, 'Unless the Qur'ân be sent
554 II,      XXV   |         Aaron as a minister; and we said, 'Go ye to the people who
555 II,      XXV   |           people of Noah, when they said the apostles were liars,
556 II,      XXV   |             aware.~ ~And when it is said, 'Adore ye the Merciful!'
557 II,     XXVI   |       Pharaoh, will they not fear?' Said he, 'My Lord! verily, I
558 II,     XXVI   |           that they may kill me 2.' Said He, Not so; but go with
559 II,     XXVI   |      children of Israel."'~ ~And he said, 'Did we not bring thee
560 II,     XXVI   |           art of the ungrateful!'~ ~Said he, 'I did commit this,
561 II,     XXVI   |          the children of Israel!'~ ~Said Pharaoh, 'Who is the Lord
562 II,     XXVI   |            the Lord of the worlds?' Said he, 'The Lord of the heavens
563 II,     XXVI   |              if ye are but sure.'~ ~Said he to those about him, '
564 II,     XXVI   |             Do ye not listen?' [25] Said he, 'Your Lord and the Lord
565 II,     XXVI   |            your fathers of yore!'~ ~Said he, 'Verily, your apostle
566 II,     XXVI   |            to you is surely mad!'~ ~Said he, 'The Lord of the east

568 II,     XXVI   |           one of the imprisoned!'~ ~Said he, 'What, if I come to
569 II,     XXVI   |      something obvious?'~ ~ ./. 30] Said he, 'Bring it, if thou art
570 II,     XXVI   |           to the spectators!~ ~He 1 said to the chiefs around him, '
571 II,     XXVI   |           then ye bid?'~ ~[35] They said, 'Give him and his brother
572 II,     XXVI   |            a stated day, and it was said to the people, 'Are ye assembled?
573 II,     XXVI   |             the sorcerers came they said to Pharaoh, 'Shall we, verily,
574 II,     XXVI   |            we gain the upper hand?' Said he, 'Yes; and, verily, ye
575 II,     XXVI   |              my throne).' And Moses said to them, 'Throw down what
576 II,     XXVI   |            ropes and their rods and said, 'By Pharaoh's might, verily,
577 II,     XXVI   |           themselves down, adoring. Said they, 'We believe in the
578 II,     XXVI   |           Lord of Moses and Aaron!' Said he, 'Do ye believe in Him
579 II,     XXVI   |          together!'~ ~ ./. 50] They said, 'No harm; verily, unto
580 II,     XXVI   |            other, Moses' companions said, 'Verily, we are overtaken!'
581 II,     XXVI   |          Verily, we are overtaken!' Said he, 'Not so; verily, with
582 II,     XXVI   |            of Abraham; [70] when he said to his father and his people, '
583 II,     XXVI   |             What do ye serve?' They said, 'We serve idols, and we
584 II,     XXVI   |           still devoted to them. He said, 'Can they hear you when
585 II,     XXVI   |        profit you, or harm?'~ ~They said, 'No; but we found our fathers
586 II,     XXVI   |        fathers doing thus,' [75] He said, 'Have ye considered what
587 II,     XXVI   |             astray, and it shall be said to them, "Where is what
588 II,     XXVI   |             105] The people of Noah said the apostles were liars,
589 II,     XXVI   |             when their brother Noah said to them, 'Will ye not fear?
